Mountaintop Studios closed a new $30 million funding round for its untitled tactical FPS debut and locked in several creators and celebrity angel investors. This list includes top creators shroud, tarik, iiTzTimmy, Cohh Carnage, and Sacriel alongside Grammy-Award winner Zedd and the NBA’s Paul George.
Mountaintop Studios plans to leverage these creator relationships to validate the studio’s concept and progress. Several of its new angel investors are former esports pros. Shroud and tarik formerly played both Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Valorant professionally, while iiTzTimmy competes in Apex Legends currently. This experience and knowledge will be valuable for Mountiantop as it cultivates a competitive community.
Anthos Capital led the round with RX3 Growth Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Abstract, vgames, BoxGroup and Spark Capital participating. Athos’ Zack Zaharis will join the studio’s board.
Notably, there are connections between Mountaintop’s creator investors and its VC funding partners. Cohh Carnage and Sacriel have ties to Andreessen Horowitz, serving as creator scouts for a16z Games. Additionally, Shroud and Sacriel are also working together on a triple-A open world survival game from Splash Damage.
Oculus alumni Nate Mitchell and Matt Hansen cofounded Mountaintop Studios in 2020 with $5.5 million in initial funding. This was quickly followed with a $30 million round six months later in early 2021. Today’s funding announcement follows an SEC filing from October 2023 that reported a $20.5 million Series A round.
Mountaintop is currently hiring and playtesting their upcoming game. The studio plans to fully reveal its upcoming title later this year.
