Intel is gearing up to expand its list of top processors with the upcoming Arrow Lake-S, also known as Intel Core Ultra 200-series for desktops. However, recent reports suggest that Intel may have decided to cancel the Arrow Lake-S refresh (Intel Core Ultra 300-series) that was rumored for release next year. Despite this, a leak has revealed the code name for an upcoming desktop CPU generation.
The rumored Arrow Lake-S refresh was expected to include updates to the neural processing unit (NPU), although it was never officially confirmed. Given that the NPU doesn’t have a significant impact on desktop performance compared to laptops, where it plays a more crucial role, the cancellation decision makes sense.
While the cancellation may disappoint some users, it also raises questions about the future of Intel’s processor sockets. If the LGA1851 socket is only used for one generation of processors, it could result in a gap between CPU generations until Nova Lake arrives in 2026. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the Arrow Lake-S refresh, there is still a possibility of updates to the laptop variants Arrow Lake-H and HX.
On a brighter note, leaks suggest that the successor to Nova Lake-S will be named Razer Lake, hinting at the future direction of Intel’s processor lineup. As we await an official announcement on Arrow Lake-S, rumors point to a potential unveiling on October 10 with a release date of October 24.
