Riot Games has introduced Global Power Rankings for League of Legends esports, utilizing a data-driven rankings engine powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS). This innovation aims to contextualize team strength across Tier 1 Leagues. The rankings will be updated after each day of play at the upcoming 2024 League of Legends World Championships to offer a comprehensive snapshot of teams worldwide.
The Global Power Rankings use a blended Elo metric, combining a team’s Elo (weighted at 80%) with their league’s Elo (weighted at 20%). Updates occur daily during Worlds, prioritizing international events over regional ones. The system also shows potential predictive capabilities, correlating predicted outcomes with actual events.
Riot designed the Global Power Rankings to address unique challenges in League of Legends esports, considering the ever-changing meta due to frequent patch updates and varying skill levels across leagues. Future improvements will incorporate in-game stats, individual power rankings, and enhancements for accuracy.
