The European Commission has issued a warning to Apple, stating that the tech giant must allow other devices to connect to its iOS ecosystem to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Failure to do so may result in penalties.
The Commission has initiated two specification proceedings to outline how Apple should offer “free and effective” interoperability to developers and businesses using iOS and iPadOS controlled hardware and software features.
The first proceeding focuses on connectivity features for devices such as smartwatches, headphones, and VR headsets that rely on iOS interoperability.
The second proceeding will examine Apple’s process for handling interoperability requests from developers.
The EC emphasizes the importance of a transparent and fair request process to ensure all developers have a smooth path to interoperability and innovation.
Facing Scrutiny
The proceedings are expected to be concluded within six months, with initial findings shared with Apple. Non-compliance could lead to significant fines, as Apple is already under investigation for multiple violations of the DMA.
In June, the EC’s preliminary findings revealed that Apple’s App Store rules breached regulations regarding business terms. More investigations on non-compliance are ongoing.
European Commission’s Executive VP responsible for competition policy, Margrethe Vestager, stated that using specification proceedings under the DMA aims to guide Apple towards effective interoperability compliance through constructive dialogue.
Vestager emphasizes the importance of fair and open digital markets, highlighting that interoperability with smartphones and operating systems is crucial. The process aims to provide clarity for all parties involved and ensure that proposed measures meet business needs.
