After more than a year of anticipation, Final Fantasy 16 has finally arrived on PC, but the initial reception has been mixed. While the game has a Very Positive rating on Steam, many reviews highlight the use of an unofficial mod called FFXVIFix, which addresses various issues with the PC port. This mod can be downloaded for free on GitHub.
One of the key features of the mod is the removal of the 30 frames per second (fps) cap imposed on cutscenes and photo mode in the game. This limitation was noticeable in the initial PC release, causing a disjointed experience during certain scenes. With FFXVIFix, this cap is eliminated, providing a smoother gameplay experience.
In addition to unlocking frame rates, the mod also offers proper support for ultrawide aspect ratios (21:9 or 32:9). While the game technically supports these ratios, it still utilizes black bars to fit the display. FFXVIFix removes these black bars, ensuring a full-screen experience and addressing HUD and field of view scaling for unique aspect ratios.
Aside from these main enhancements, the mod includes various other minor tweaks such as adjustable field of view, DLSS 3 Frame Generation, and a high-quality JXL option for photo mode screenshots. Despite some issues, Final Fantasy 16 on PC boasts exclusive features like DLSS 3, AMD’s FSR 3, and Nvidia’s DLAA, along with efficient CPU utilization for smoother performance.
While Final Fantasy 16 received praise upon its release, our review noted some pacing and quest-related drawbacks. Despite these criticisms, the game’s intricate story and intense battles still captivate players.
