iOS 18 now allows users to replace the default camera app on the lock screen with a third-party app, offering more flexibility and control over their camera experience.
Popular camera apps like Halide and Obscura have quickly adapted to this feature, providing users with shortcuts on the lock screen for easy access.
To swap out the default camera button on the lock screen, users need to go through a few steps involving lock screen customization mode. By deleting the default icon and adding a shortcut for Halide or Obscura, users can seamlessly switch to their preferred camera app right from the lock screen.
Once set up, using the shortcut on the lock screen will seamlessly transition to either Obscura or Halide for capturing photos before returning to the lock screen with a simple swipe up gesture.
While third-party camera app launch speeds may be slightly slower than Apple’s default app, the added control and advanced features they offer make it a worthwhile tradeoff for many users.
Furthermore, users can also add shortcuts for these third-party camera apps in the Control Center for quick access without removing Apple’s camera app from the lock screen, providing a versatile camera experience on iOS 18.
