The International 2024 Finals Weekend has kicked off with the presence of Gabe “Gaben” Newell at TI13’s Opening Ceremony. In a video message released on Sep. 13, Gaben welcomed Dota 2 back to Europe, the birthplace of the game.
Newell, the president of Valve Corporation, the creators of Dota 2, has a well-known passion for the game. He makes it a point to either appear in person or send a message to officially inaugurate each International event, and this year is no exception.
Gaben’s address to the fans was the highlight of a circus-themed extravaganza at the live event. Accompanied by grand orchestral music, the eight remaining teams in TI13 were introduced on stage.
Fans, who had been patiently waiting to enter the arena since 7:00 am local time, erupted into cheers as the teams made their grand entrance. While all teams received support, favorites like Team Liquid, Gaimin Gladiators, and Falcons received the loudest cheers.
However, the biggest ovation was reserved for Gaben at TI13, whose message energized the fans to a fever pitch. Remembering the first International held in Europe at Gamescom, Cologne, in 2011, Newell highlighted the significance of TI returning to Europe for the first time since then (TI10 in Romania was without a live audience).
Newell concluded his speech with his iconic line – “Welcome to the International,” officially commencing the event.
The International 2024 Main Event will continue from Sep. 13 to Sep. 15, with the champions claiming the majority of the $2.5 million USD prize pool (current amount at the time of writing).
