Instagram Threads, a competitor to Meta’s X, has introduced a new feature that simplifies access to fediverse settings for users. Now, instead of requesting others to turn on the fediverse sharing option, users can simply share a single URL that allows them to enable the Threads feature with just one click.
This new feature was showcased and launched live at FediForum, an online event focused on the development and exploration of fediverse technology and related protocols like ActivityPub, the AT Protocol, Nostr, and more.
Fediverse sharing, which allows Threads posts to be shared across the open social web powered by the ActivityPub protocol, is a key feature of Threads. By enabling this option, users not only expand the reach of their content but also demonstrate Meta’s commitment to open protocols that integrate with other platforms.
However, the fediverse sharing feature is not enabled by default in Threads, leading to confusion among users. To address this, a shareable URL has been introduced to help users easily enable the feature and broaden their content’s visibility across different social networks.
Threads users can now engage with the wider fediverse community, follow profiles, view replies and likes from fediverse users, and syndicate content through the Threads API for third-party applications. This integration aims to bridge communication between Threads users and the open social web, facilitated by the ActivityPub protocol.
To simplify the process of enabling fediverse sharing, users can now utilize the shareable URL https://www.threads.net/settings/account/fediverse to guide others in activating the feature. This enhancement reflects Meta’s commitment to accommodating and educating Threads users about the potential of the fediverse community.
