Learn how to play Viktor in League of Legends season 14 with our comprehensive guide, taking inspiration from the 2020 world champion mid laner Showmaker.
Viktor mid Guide – Everything you need to know
Viktor has been a major presence in both professional play and solo queue in recent years. Just like Syndra, he perfectly embodies the characteristics of a control mage and mid lane carry. However, mastering Viktor takes time and dedication. To help you out, we’ve compiled the best current builds and rune setups used by one of the best Korean mid laners in the world: DK Showmaker.
Viktor mid Build
The 2024 season brought major item changes, and after extensive testing, Showmaker and other players have found the most effective itemization for Viktor.
The first core item for the mage champion now is Luden’s Companion, which brings lots of burst damage. Follow it up with Shadowflame to further amplify Viktor’s damage output. For boots, you can either run Sorcerer’s Shoes or Ionian Boots of Lucidity, depending on which kind of stats you need most between magic penetration and ability haste.
Then, you have to make a choice for the fourth item slot: you can run Lich Bane to maximize the single target damage output or Rylai’s Crystal Scepter to apply an AoE slow when damaging enemies. Make the decision depending on the game state and team composition.
Round off with Zhonya’s Hourglass and Void Staff to get both defensive stats and more damage output. Void staff is particularly strong later in the game since it applies % magic penetration.
Overall, the usual build seen in most Viktor games includes:
- Luden’s Companion
- Shadowflame
- Ionian Boots of Lucidity/Sorcerer’s Shoes
- Rylai’s Crystal Scepter/Lich Bane
- Zhonya’s Hourglass
- Void Staff/Banshee’s Veil
Viktor’s Runes
Compared to item builds, the rune setup has remained more or less the same. Showmaker still runs First Strike to generate extra gold and accelerate his item purchases. The minor runes to pair it up are:
- Magical Footwear to get boots for free and save extra gold;
- Biscuit Delivery for extra mana and HP during the laning phase;
- Cosmic Insight for lower summoner spells cooldown.
The secondary rune tree is Sorcery, with Manaflow Band and Trascendence as the two choices. Regardless of the keystone rune, the minor runes are fairly similar in both setups.
Now that the rune system has also been changed, Viktor runs the scaling HP rune to get additional health in the late game.
Stick to this guide and play Viktor like Showmaker to get the most out of the Machine Herald.
