iFixIt has finally launched its own soldering iron, a highly anticipated addition to its lineup of electronic repair toolkits and repair guides. With over 1,000 repair guides requiring a soldering iron, the introduction of the new Smart Soldering Iron aims to simplify the soldering process and make it more accessible, especially for beginners.
One of the key features of the Smart Soldering Iron is its power source. Instead of relying on a traditional wall plug, it is powered by USB-C, allowing compatibility with various USB-C power delivery sources. iFixIt recommends using its 65-watt GaN charger for optimal performance, as the soldering iron can heat up in under 5 seconds with the right power delivery. However, the heating time may vary with lower wattage USB-C devices.
To eliminate guesswork when heating up the soldering iron, iFixIt offers the Portable Soldering Station, which includes the iron and a portable power station with dual USB-C ports capable of delivering up to 100W. The power station features a 55-watt-hour battery, providing up to eight hours of continuous soldering on a single charge. Additionally, users can use the spare USB-C port to power their devices like phones or laptops.
The Smart Soldering Iron distinguishes itself with an LED ring that indicates its status. Blue signifies the tip below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, purple indicates active heating or cooling, and orange signals the iron is ready for use at the preset temperature. While the temperature setting requires initial configuration via a PC, the iron also includes automatic sleep mode, fall protection, and an accelerometer for added safety and convenience.
Although priced at $80 for the Smart Soldering Iron alone and $250 for the Portable Soldering Station bundle, iFixIt offers a $300 Soldering Toolkit package that includes additional tools like a wire stripper, no-clean flux, and precision angled tweezers. Preorders are currently available, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 15.
