Instagram is enhancing the messaging experience by introducing new features for photo editing, sticker creation, and themes. The goal is to make Instagram more attractive as a messaging platform with engaging features that facilitate seamless conversations. While some of these features may not be groundbreaking, they are aimed at reducing barriers that could hinder users from sending messages.
The direct messaging (DMs) feature is a competitive aspect of social apps, competing with platforms like Twitter. While some startups are integrating DMs into their apps, Instagram’s Threads remains dependent on Instagram’s existing DMs for private connections.
In the latest update, Instagram users will now have access to a sticker maker within the direct messages interface. This tool allows users to create reaction stickers by selecting an object from their photo library. Additionally, similar to WhatsApp, iPhone users can create stickers that are compatible across various apps.
Users can now also add stickers or draw over photos before sending them to friends directly from the chat interface. Previously available only in Stories, these editing tools can now be applied within direct messages, eliminating the need to save and then send edited photos separately.
Furthermore, a new feature enables users to post birthday notes to receive birthday wishes from friends. Tapping on the note triggers a cake effect and confetti animation, enhancing the birthday celebration experience on Instagram, akin to Facebook’s sticky birthday feature.
Instagram is also introducing new chat themes like “Fall” and “Sabrina Carpenter,” in line with other messaging apps.
Earlier this week, Instagram introduced a feature allowing users to comment on Stories to boost engagement on the platform.
