Starting a phone company is a challenging endeavor, and OSOM Products, which emerged from the remains of Essential in 2020, is now ceasing operations. Android Authority was the first to report this news, based on an internal announcement from CEO Jason Keats.
OSOM faced numerous obstacles, especially with its focus on privacy-centric devices. Like Essential, the company also faced legal issues, including a lawsuit from a former employee alleging financial mismanagement.
Although OSOM did release a mobile device, it was not the initially promised phone but rather technology used in Web3 devices by Solana.
One of OSOM’s products, the OSOM Privacy Cable, allowed users to disable data transfer for security against potential threats like “juice jackers.”
CEO Jason Keats confirmed the shutdown, citing the lack of customers for OSOM’s mobile phone and the subsequent pivot to a new project in 2024. Despite efforts to sell the company to HP, a deal was not reached, leading to the decision to cease operations.
The company’s future project, an AI-powered camera, will not come to fruition due to the challenging market environment for fundraising in the consumer electronics sector. While some operations will continue to meet contractual obligations, OSOM will officially close on September 6th.
