Asymmetrical multiplayer games have become the go-to place for classic horror icons in video games, such as Jason from Friday the 13th and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While this trend is enjoyable, games like Killer Klowns from Outer Space show that there is room for something different. Enter RetroRealms, a platform and universe that offers a unique twist on classic horror franchises.
RetroRealms allows players to mix and match characters from different horror franchises. Imagine fighting the Evil Dead as Michael Myers or escaping Smith’s Grove Psychiatric Hospital as Ash. This concept was explored at PAX West, where we got a firsthand look at how the game works and plays.
Tribute to terror
During our demo at PAX, we met with Tim Hessem, the executive producer of RetroRealms for Boss Team Games, and Mike Herbster, game director and designer at WayForward Technologies. They introduced us to RetroRealms, a universe designed to incorporate various horror franchises. At launch, the game features Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead, with plans for more additions in the future.
The main hub in RetroRealms is a haunted Pizza Hut where players can explore different horror worlds. The game features two arcade cabinets, one for Halloween and one for Ash vs Evil Dead, along with interactive dioramas showcasing scenes from each franchise.
There is also a museum section with 3D renders of items from the games, paying close attention to detail. The game developers worked closely with IP holders to ensure accuracy, right down to Ash’s sideburns.
After the tour, we delved into gameplay. Starting with the Halloween machine, we followed Michael Myers on a bloody and colorful 2D platforming adventure that felt reminiscent of classic games like Castlevania, with unique mechanics like ranged attacks and traversal abilities.
Switching to playing as Ash in his game, we experienced a different playstyle – faster and more acrobatic. The game mechanics were tailored to each character, adding a unique touch to the experience.
As we explored more gameplay features, including the ability to control different characters in various worlds, the potential for RetroRealms to become a hub of horror icons was evident. With planned updates and player feedback in mind, RetroRealms has the potential to be a thrilling experience for horror fans.
RetroRealms will be available on October 18 for PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
