Microsoft is continuing its battle with Apple to bring its cloud gaming service to the App Store, citing Apple’s 30% commission on purchases as a major hurdle in monetizing the platform.
According to The Verge, Microsoft provided statements to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as part of their investigation into market dominance in mobile browsers and cloud gaming service distribution.
In these statements, Microsoft criticized the technical requirements and guidelines enforced by the App Store.
“In relation to the market for distribution of web apps on iOS devices, Microsoft reiterates its prior comments regarding the inferior functionality of, and the difficulties end users have discovering and accessing, web apps (compared to native iOS apps),” the statement read.
Microsoft also took issue with Apple’s 30% commission fee, stating that it hinders their ability to effectively monetize their cloud gaming service.
Apple, in response, submitted its own statements to the CMA, focusing on the commercial aspect of the issue rather than technical concerns. Apple noted changes they have made to their App Store guidelines for cloud gaming apps.
Overall, the clash between Microsoft and Apple highlights the ongoing debate over App Store policies and their impact on developers.
