Google has announced the release of Android 15, with the source code now available before the official consumer launch. Supported Pixel devices will receive the new mobile operating system in the coming weeks. Additionally, Android 15 will be launching on devices from Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi in the near future.
The update brings exciting features such as Private Space, allowing users to protect sensitive information within the operating system. Users can now save favorite split-screen app combinations for quick access and pin the taskbar permanently on the screen. Other enhancements include partial screen recording and easier passkey management.
In a significant move, Google has made Android 15 available on the Android Open Source Project, enabling customization of the OS and device compatibility. Developers have more tools to optimize their app experience across platforms, with improvements in typography, internationalization, media, cameras, user experience, privacy, and security. The update also introduces support for convenient single-tap passkey sign-ins and additional security measures against malicious actors.
As part of developer outreach, Google will launch an educational series called Spotlight Weeks, focusing on technical topics related to Android development, with the first installment dedicated to Android 15.
McCullough, VP of Product for Android Developer, emphasized Android 15’s emphasis on privacy and security, productivity, and enhancing app quality, media, and camera experiences for tablets and foldable devices. Developers can access improved typography, internationalization, camera, and media features, with most app-facing changes being optional to allow developers ample time to adjust before targeting SDK version 35.
