X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, has finally introduced a highly requested feature for direct messages: the ability to edit messages.
This past weekend, X made the edit message feature available to iOS users. An engineer at the company announced the roll-out and mentioned that the edit messages function will soon be accessible on additional platforms.
Here’s how you can use it:
- Open a direct message chat in your X iOS app.
- Long press on a message you sent or tap on the three-dot menu next to the message.
- Select the “Edit message” option to make changes to the sent message.
According to a support page, there is no time limit for editing messages. Our testing revealed that you can also edit older direct messages on the platform. However, you can only edit a message five times in total. The social network enforces the same limit for editing posts.
While X stores a log of edited messages for security purposes, it currently does not display a version history of edited messages.
Users expect the ability to edit messages in messaging apps, as other popular chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger have had this feature for some time. Apple also introduced the option to edit sent messages in iMessage with iOS 16.
