The ongoing Recall saga takes another twist as Microsoft’s AI feature cannot be uninstalled, despite indications to the contrary in the latest version of Windows 11 24H2.
Initially spotted by Desk Modder in the Control Panel’s “Turn Windows features on and off” menu, Microsoft has now clarified to The Verge that this was a bug that will be rectified in a future update.
While the ability to uninstall Recall would have provided reassurance amidst security concerns, it can still be disabled. Originally set to be on by default for new Copilot+ PCs, security vulnerabilities led to it becoming opt-in, with an eventual delay. The upcoming Recall update will enhance security with requirements for Windows Hello and full encryption.
Expected to launch in preview in October, compatibility with Recall demands a powerful NPU of at least 40 TOPS, ruling out older PCs and some current-gen Intel laptops. Microsoft had marketed Recall as a showcase for the enhanced NPUs in Copilot+ laptops, alongside creative features like Cocreator in Paint.
Fortunately, initial Copilot+ PCs were equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Arm chips, offering improved battery life and efficiency.
