If you were an avid computer user in the late 2000s, you are likely familiar with the name Bloons. This colorful series was a gaming sensation of its time, with five games and numerous updates released between 2007 and 2009. What started as a simple browser-based puzzle game centered around popping balloons has now transformed into a robust tower defense game that continues to captivate players.
The upcoming release of Bloons Card Storm marks a significant change for the series. Developer Ninja Kiwi is reimagining its iconic game as a deck-building strategy game, a surprising but fitting evolution. After trying out a few early levels of the game, I can already see the potential for it to be a mobile gaming hit.
Bloons Card Storm retains some core elements from Bloons Tower Defense, but presents them in a new format. Players still defend a “tower” from oncoming balloons by strategically placing dart-shooting monkeys and tack shooters, but now the gameplay involves a duel between monkeys who take turns playing cards to defend their territory and attack with balloons.
Similar to popular card games like Hearthstone, players have limited mana per turn to deploy cards with specific costs. The game introduces timers for each balloon on the field, requiring strategic management to prevent damage while launching attacks. Decision-making becomes crucial in deciding when to attack, defend, or summon more balloons to overwhelm the opponent.
While mastering the gameplay may take time, Bloons Card Storm offers a deep and engaging strategy experience. With its mobile-friendly controls and quick matches, the game is tailored for on-the-go gaming and promises to be a delightful time-waster for players. Anticipate its release later this year on iOS, Android, and PC.
