Ben Freeberg, a former associate at venture firm Alpha Partners, faced a sudden health scare when he passed out one day. Despite initial tests showing no issues, less than a year later he was diagnosed with Stage 3a cancer, highlighting the importance of early detection. This experience led him to launch the Oncology Ventures fund, with a focus on improving cancer care and research.
Drawing from his background at Optum Ventures and Thyme Health, Freeberg successfully raised $30 million for the fund, attracting investments from notable healthcare institutions like Cardinal Health and Moffitt Cancer Center. Unlike other cancer-focused VC firms, Oncology Ventures prioritizes startups leveraging data for enhanced care and treatment options, rather than drug discovery.
The firm has already invested in seven startups, including Gabbi and Reimagine Care, showcasing a commitment to innovative solutions in the cancer care space. Freeberg’s personal experience with cancer not only drives his investment thesis but also fosters strong connections with founders and helps secure competitive deals.
With a focus on reducing healthcare costs and improving outcomes, Oncology Ventures aims to make a meaningful impact in the field of cancer care. Freeberg plans to expand the team in the future, while leveraging the expertise of advisory board members like Dr. Lee Newcomer and Carolyn Starrett.
