Apple has announced updates to browser choice screens, default apps, and app deletion for iOS and iPadOS users in the EU.
According to a recent statement by Apple, these changes reflect the ongoing discussions with the European Commission regarding app compliance with the Digital Market Act.
The enhancements to the EU browser choice screen will provide more information about featured browsers and offer developers additional performance data. This screen will now be shown to all EU users with Safari as their default browser, addressing past concerns about limited browser options on iOS.
“In addition, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will introduce a new Default Apps section in Settings for EU users, allowing them to delete apps like the App Store, Messages, Photos, Camera, and Safari,” Apple stated.
“Future software updates will include new default settings for various functions, providing users with more choices and control.”
Adapting to Change
This shift by Apple signals a willingness to offer users in the EU more freedom and options, notably in choosing their default browser. It demonstrates a departure from Apple’s traditional tightly-controlled ecosystem, possibly in response to regulatory pressures.
