We had the opportunity to talk to GIANTX support player, Lee “IgNar” Dong-geun, after their recent games. The Korean player shared insights about joining the team, leaving NRG on a positive note, the team’s “chaotic” start, and most importantly, his preferences when it comes to kebabs.
Excel’s merger with the Spanish organization Giants brought not only a change in the team’s identity but also a refreshed roster for the 2024 season. As the winter split’s second week came to a close, and with the team on the edge of playoff qualification, Lee Jones seized the chance to gather some valuable insights.
Esports.net: What went wrong against Fnatic?
IgNar: I think we could have snowballed harder. The first big fight at mid was really significant. Looking at our comp, we should have snowballed, but once they got ahead, it became a bit challenging to play. So, I think snowballing and teamfighting were the crucial factors.
Are you confident you’ll still reach playoffs?
Yeah, we’ll see. Anything can happen, but I hope we try hard and then I think we can make it.
How do you rate GIANTX’s start to the season so far?
To be honest, I think our team’s start has been a little bit chaotic – we didn’t have clear calls sometimes. I believe this has caused some confusion, but I think it’s the same for every team. It’s still early in the split, so I’m confident we’re working on fixing it.
Usually a support would be one of the shot-callers, have you been involved in that aspect since joining?
Yes, support players usually make a lot of calls. But I think it’s more about every player being able to see the angles or to make a shot-call when the team is watching the same direction, in my opinion. So, first, we need to work more on what the team is watching. Once all five team members see the same thing, it’s much easier to make a call on it. So, I believe we are working on fixing it.
Lee Jones: I wondered how you came to join GIANTX, returning to EU after years in NA.
What made you decide to leave NRG after a really successful split last summer?
There was a lot of chaotic stuff going on at the end of the off-season. I thought I was going to stay on NRG, but many unexpected things happened. Additionally, I wanted to come back to EU, so I think that’s why it happened.
Is there anything you’re missing from LA now that you’ve left?
I would say the weather. The weather was really nice.
Who’s got the better kebabs, LA or Berlin?
I think Berlin kebabs are so good. They don’t compare.
How are you finding the game in season 14 with all of its changes?
Right now, it feels like every character is so much stronger for me because of the items, much stronger than before. The map change has also made things different. Before, if you made one mistake, you could easily die because the map was smaller and everything was closer. But now, I feel like it’s much easier to retake the bushes and spots because everything is further away. So, with these two things, it’s a big difference in feeling for me.
