The summer has been bustling with mobile game activity, including updates and new releases such as new Candy Crush competitions and a fresh battle in Westeros.
GameRefinery has recently highlighted some of the latest mobile gaming trends in July with its Mobile Game Market Review, spotlighting the performance of new titles like HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero and Zynga’s Game of Thrones: Legends leveraging the famous Game of Thrones IP.
Despite the hype surrounding the Game of Thrones IP and Zynga’s reputation, Game of Thrones: Legends has only achieved modest success so far, struggling to make it into the top 200 on the US top grossing charts.
GameRefinery suggests that the lack of overlap between Game of Thrones fans and match-3 players may contribute to the game’s mediocre performance, unlike Marvel Snap, which successfully caters to both superhero fans and card game enthusiasts.
Another Success Story
Marvel Snap, developed by Second Dinner, saw a significant boost in revenue in July, coinciding with the release of the highly praised Deadpool and Wolverine movies.
The addition of a Deadpool-inspired battle pass on the movie’s release date led to a 300% increase in Marvel Snap revenue.
Marvel Snap’s successful performance on the top grossing charts showcases the game’s ability to engage players with or without the support of new movie releases.
The introduction of guilds, typically found in MMOs and 4X games, demonstrates the evolving nature of gaming genres in mobile games.
More Exciting Updates
Candy Crush by King introduced five new events in July, a higher number than usual for a single month. These events boosted the game’s popularity, offering players new challenges and competitions.
Lastly, HoYoverse’s Zenless Zone Zero, an action RPG, achieved impressive numbers with over 45 million pre-registrations and reaching the $50 million milestone. However, its earnings fall short of its predecessors Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, possibly due to audience overlap.
GameRefinery suggests that Zenless Zone Zero’s gameplay may appeal more to players using a controller on a PC or console than on mobile devices, potentially impacting its performance metrics.
Despite this, Zenless Zone Zero surpassed pre-registration numbers of Honkai: Star Rail and even outperformed Supercell’s Squad Busters across platforms.
