X, formerly known as Twitter, has announced the rollout of passkey support for Android users. This follows the introduction of passkey support for all iOS users in April.
Passkey log-ins enhance security by requiring physical access to your device in addition to the login credentials. They utilize Face ID, Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security key for authentication, making it harder for unauthorized individuals to access your accounts remotely.
Passkeys represent a newer, more secure technology that eliminates the vulnerabilities associated with traditional username and password combinations, such as phishing attacks.
X is part of a growing list of tech companies embracing passkey support. Other notable names include Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, and GitHub.
For X users who previously relied on SMS 2FA (two-factor authentication), passkey support offers an alternative following the removal of SMS 2FA for free users last year.
To enable passkeys on X, simply log into the app, navigate to “Your account,” then select “Settings and privacy.” Choose “Security and account access,” followed by “Security.” Under “Additional password protection,” select “Passkey,” click “Add a passkey,” and follow the prompts to activate the feature.
