Tuesday’s Made by Google event solidified Gemini as the default assistant for the Pixel. Previously, users had the option to replace Google Assistant with the generative AI platform, but now the newly unveiled Pixel 9 phones come with Gemini as the default assistant.
Google acknowledges that some users may not be completely satisfied with a platform that is still evolving and prone to hallucinations. Those users have the option to switch back to what Google refers to as its “legacy assistant.” Despite this, Google has confirmed that Google Assistant will still be a part of its Nest/Home operations.
The hardware division of Google has also seen improvements, with updates to products like the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Google TV Streamer, as well as new AI capabilities being introduced.
Gemini shows promise with its advanced neural networks, but it also has its limitations. While the technology has proven to be impressive for various tasks, it still faces challenges and skepticism from some due to potential issues with the black-box model.
Google has showcased impressive AI tools, particularly in imaging, such as Magic Eraser and the new Add Me editing feature. The Pixel 9 introduces more AI features powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, including Live, which aims to provide more human-like conversations on the handset.
With the release of the new Pixel devices, Google may be considering a wider adoption of the Gemini assistant across Android. The success of this adoption will depend on Google’s update timeline and the willingness of device-makers to integrate Gemini. While companies like Samsung are working on their own generative AI solutions, it is unlikely that they will surpass Gemini significantly.
The future support for the “legacy” Assistant on mobile devices and the compatibility of lower-end devices with Gemini will also play a critical role in the timeline of adoption.
Pixel 9 devices are set to start shipping on August 22.
