Just like how some players prefer using a joystick instead of a mouse and keyboard in Dota 2, locking the camera in the game is also a matter of personal preference. While it’s not something we necessarily recommend, it is a valid choice.
We believe in inclusivity in the Dota 2 community, so here’s a guide on how to lock the camera in Dota 2:
How to Configure Camera Lock Settings in Dota 2
To lock your camera on your hero in Dota 2, follow these steps to configure the setting:
- Go to the top-left corner of the in-game main menu in Dota 2.
- Select the Settings option represented by a cog icon.
- Click on the ‘Hotkeys’ tab.
- In the Unit Actions section, assign a hotkey for the ‘Select Hero’ setting. We suggest using the Number 1 or F1 key for convenience.
- Additionally, adjust your Camera settings by going to the ‘Options’ tab and locating the ‘Camera’ section.
- Enable ‘Hold Select Hero to Follow’ and disable the ‘Edge Pan’ option.
Disabling Edge Pan is crucial to prevent unlocking the camera when the cursor moves beyond the screen. While this restricts mouse movement, you can still use arrow keys or click on the mini-map for navigation.
How to Manually Lock the Camera on Your Hero in Dota 2
If you’re wary of the strict camera lock setting, you can try the default method of locking the camera by double-clicking your hero portrait. This method, however, does not disable Edge Pan, so moving off-screen will unlock the camera.
Is it Recommended to Lock the Camera in Dota 2?
Proceed with caution! Locking the camera in Dota 2 is generally not advised for several reasons. Professional Dota 2 players avoid using this setting due to its limitations.
Locking the camera restricts your map awareness, which is essential for monitoring events and engagements across the map. Many Dota 2 heroes have long attack and skill ranges, making it crucial to have a broad view. Additionally, some abilities, like Winter Wyvern’s Arctic Burn, have extended ranges that can catch you off guard with a locked camera.
While some players transitioning from League of Legends may seek the locked camera experience they’re familiar with, Dota 2 emphasizes map awareness and mobility for strategic gameplay.
