My memories of the early days of the incredible CyanogenMod custom ROM are still vivid. It was a game-changer for average Android phones, enhancing their software with a plethora of extra features and settings. When CyanogenOS met its unfortunate demise in 2016, my focus shifted to Nova Launcher during my college years. Since then, I’ve installed the launcher on nearly every Android phone I’ve owned and tailored the interface to my preferences.
However, the future of Nova Launcher seems uncertain as of late. In 2022, the company behind this remarkable Android launcher was acquired by an analytics company called Branch. Just recently, Branch made the decision to let go of the entire Nova Launcher team, with the exception of Kevin Barry, the creator of the beloved launcher.
Rob Wainwright, an engineering veteran and community lead for the Nova Launcher project, expressed his concerns about the situation. In a message, he highlighted the immense workload now placed on the remaining Nova team members due to the layoffs.
Today is a sad day. Despite being competitors, we have developed a mutual respect for the Nova team over the years. We wish all those affected by the layoffs the best. https://t.co/6OllqykCKt

In a message on the official Discord channel, Kevin Barry expressed his disappointment with the recent events but assured users that work on an upcoming update for existing Nova Launcher users would be completed. However, the lack of adequate consideration led to the harsh restructuring that resulted in over 100 layoffs at Branch.
Despite the setbacks, the future of Nova Launcher is uncertain. Fans are disheartened, and discussions about alternative options have already begun on Reddit. The pace of updates and feature additions is expected to slow significantly, and addressing feedback and bugs will become a challenge due to the reduced manpower.
It’s disheartening to hear about the situation. Wishing everyone affected the best in their future endeavors. https://t.co/08M0sEsDiU

Many are hopeful that the Smart Launcher team might consider hiring the laid-off Nova Launcher staff and potentially work on an alternative solution. However, Cliff Wade, who had been with the Nova team for nearly nine years, indicated that such a scenario is unlikely due to cost constraints.
It’s not just users who are mourning the uncertain future of Nova Launcher. Competitors like Niagara and Smart Launcher have also expressed their support for the Nova team and its fans. Nova Launcher’s popularity stemmed from its extensive customization options and user convenience. Now, the outlook for the app is grim.
