Originally released in 1993, Doom is getting a new lease on life with an enhanced edition of the first two games set to launch on Steam. This updated version will merge the two games into one and introduce a brand new episode for players to enjoy.
The store listing detailing the enhancements was shared by Wario64 on X (formerly Twitter). Described as the “definitive” edition, it will offer improvements like cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players, mod support, and performance enhanced up to 4K resolution.
In a surprising twist, a new campaign titled “Legacy of Rust” has been added, developed collaboratively by id Software, MachineGames, and Nightdive Studios. This new episode will introduce fresh demons and weapons across 16 new maps. Players can also access all other original episodes and map packs, including a new one designed for deathmatch, totaling 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps.
The enhanced editions have also been made more inclusive with a new font for better readability, high-contrast mode, and text-to-speech features. Additionally, the games have been translated into eight more languages to cater to a wider audience.
This news comes just before QuakeCon 2024, which commenced on Thursday and promises more exciting announcements over the weekend. With no official release date announced yet, this enhanced edition is poised to be a highlight of the convention.
Meanwhile, id Software continues to expand the Doom franchise with recent releases like Doom Eternal in 2020, two DLC chapters, and the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase. The studio shows no signs of slowing down, with more remasters and enhanced versions of classic Doom games in the works, each with new content additions. For example, the 2020 release of Doom 64 saw the addition of new missions in “The Lost Levels” DLC.
