Web3 IP licensing platform Spaceport is collaborating with Toei Animation — known for One Piece and Dragon Ball — to license content from its upcoming movie, Hypergalatic, for UGC gaming platforms. This partnership allows Toei to grant licenses for this IP to gaming creators for games like Roblox and Fortnite on a larger scale.
“We are excited to work with Toei Animation on Hypergalactic to blend anime with modern virtual worlds. This collaboration goes beyond introducing new content to Roblox and Fortnite; it’s about empowering communities to organically create a variety of immersive interactive experiences that resonate with fans and create new revenue streams for IP owners. For a new IP like Hypergalactic, this is an opportunity to build a fanbase and cultural impact similar to what Toei achieved with Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Digimon,” stated Le Zhang, founder and CEO of Spaceport.
Driving IP awareness
Overall, Toei is exploring a new strategy to introduce its upcoming film to players on popular gaming platforms. Spaceport provides game developers and individual creators access to an IP library for use in monetized projects. The goal is to help Toei raise awareness among the primarily Gen Z audience of these platforms, who have a strong affinity for anime (source).
“This partnership with Spaceport is a major milestone for Toei Animation. By leveraging Spaceport’s technology, we aim to bring Hypergalactic to life in ways that engage and inspire our fans. We are excited to share our latest work and collaborate directly with users to elevate our new IP to the next level. This collaboration showcases the immense potential of UGC platforms to revolutionize entertainment and fan engagement,” said Yoshi Ikezawa, head of international co-production at Toei Animation.

This partnership also helps fans mitigate legal risks associated with creating (and monetizing) content featuring IP without a license. This marks a new approach for Toei, which has previously taken extensive measures to protect its IP.
Hypergalactic is currently in post-production, with no official release date announced yet.
