After an almost four-year wait, the successor to Chromecast with Google TV has finally arrived – the Google TV Streamer. It is now available for preorder at $100 and will be shipped on September 24.
The higher price point compared to Chromecast with Google TV indicates that this is more than just a dongle. The appearance is also significantly different, with Google emphasizing its sleek design that seamlessly blends in with your home decor.
Despite Google’s attempt to make it blend in, the Google TV Streamer is quite distinctive and larger in size. It resembles a wireless router and is equipped with USB-C and HDMI ports, with an optional Ethernet port for faster speeds, perfect for local network playback.
Google boasts that the Google TV Streamer is a faster and more premium version than its predecessor, supporting 4K resolution, Dolby Vision, HDR 10, HDR 10+, HLG, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos. It is also 22% faster, addressing the performance issues of the previous Chromecast model.
Google has redesigned the voice remote for improved usability and comfort, including a textured back and a programmable button for custom actions. The Google TV Streamer also functions as a hub for Matter and Thread smart home protocols, enhancing response time and efficiency.
Overall, the Google TV Streamer appears to be a worthwhile upgrade, justifying its higher price tag. It offers color options in “porcelain” or “hazel” to suit your preferences.
