Microsoft and Activision have greenlit the creation of a new team within Blizzard, predominantly composed of employees from King.
According to a report by Windows Central, this move signifies Microsoft’s commitment to actively bolster and expand Blizzard’s popular franchises like Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and Overwatch, more so than Activision had done prior to their monumental $69 billion acquisition.
Following the acquisition, Microsoft seems eager to show more love to their extensive franchise portfolio, with numerous employees from Microsoft’s King subsidiary updating their LinkedIn profiles to reflect a change in their career focus.
A new focus on mobile
The newly-formed team at Blizzard, comprising King employees, is dedicated to creating smaller games based on existing Blizzard franchises, hinting strongly at a mobile game focus.
This presents Microsoft with an ideal opportunity to introduce mobile spin-offs of their popular franchises and further expand the reach of beloved Blizzard worlds in ways that were previously unexplored.
Aligning with Microsoft’s broader strategy to engage with a wider audience across various platforms, this move solidifies Microsoft’s commitment to mobile gaming following their acquisition.
With King’s expertise in mobile games, these new games could potentially support Xbox’s mobile gaming store on both Android and iOS platforms.
