Marvel Rivals, the upcoming 6v6 (super)hero shooter from NetEase, recently concluded its extended closed beta test, garnering over 7 million hours watched on Twitch. Streams Charts reported an average of over 20,000 viewers during the beta test period, which lasted from July 23 to August 5.
During the closed beta test, Marvel Rivals became the 20th most watched game on Twitch, surpassing its main competitor Overwatch 2, which accumulated about 6 million viewing hours. Marvel Rivals’ success was attributed to its Twitch drops campaign, where viewers could only obtain beta keys through drops, encouraging more viewership. Additionally, NetEase organized tournaments and promoted the game at San Diego Comic Con, further boosting visibility.
Marvel Rivals had previously conducted a closed alpha test in May, during which it amassed 3.8 million hours watched. The recent closed beta test reflected a significant increase in viewership.

The strategy of Twitch drops has proven successful for various developers, such as Riot Games with its Valorant beta test which accumulated over 150 million hours watched in the first week. Another example is Tencent’s Arena Breakout: Infinite, a rival to Escape from Tarkov, which garnered nearly 7 million hours watched in its initial week through Twitch Drops.
