Animoca Brands unveiled Anichess, a free-to-play chess strategy game developed in collaboration with Chess.com and chess maestro Magnus Carlsen.
Animoca Brands revealed that Anichess offers a fresh perspective on the classic chess game, providing players with a captivating blend of traditional chess rules, an engaging storyline, and innovative gameplay elements.
Phase 1: A solo chess adventure
During its first phase, Anichess introduces players to a solo adventure featuring chess puzzles enriched by magical spells. These spells, such as transforming non-royal pieces into knights, add a strategic layer to the game. Anichess is accessible for free at www.anichess.com via a web browser or mobile-compatible web browser.
Anichess retains the core principles of chess, requiring strategic planning, probability assessment, and psychological acumen. The game introduces a spell mechanism that provides an entirely new strategic layer. Players of all skill levels, including beginners, are invited to enjoy this evolution of chess, amplified by new strategic depth, tactical magic, and a captivating lore.
Phase 2: Player-vs-Player in Q1 2024
The first phase of Anichess focuses on player-versus-environment (PvE) gameplay. The second phase, scheduled for Q1 2024, will introduce player-versus-player (PvP) functionality, adding an extra dimension to the gaming experience. This phased approach allows Anichess to cater to both solo players and those seeking competitive matches.
Magnus Carlsen, co-founder of Play Magnus Group and five-time World Chess Champion, said in a statement, “I am excited that Anichess is bringing innovation to chess with spells and strategy gaming elements that provide a refreshing chess experience.”
Yat Siu, the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, stated that Anichess revolutionizes the classic royal game by merging traditional strategy and gameplay with innovative spellcasting, a fantasy storyline, and Web3 functionality.
“We are thrilled to partner with Chess.com and to have Magnus Carlsen and other impressive chess talent with us as we pioneer this new dimension of chess,” Siu said.
Animoca Brands has invested in hundreds of Web3 gaming companies and projects.
