Bungie, the renowned video game development company owned by Sony, known for franchises like Halo and Destiny, has announced the layoff of 220 employees as part of efforts to address losses and prepare for future projects.
This morning, Bungie’s managing director, Pete Parsons, took to the company’s official blog to elaborate on the decision to lay off 17% of the staff, citing the increasing costs of game production as the primary reason for the action.
The company has not yet ventured into the mobile gaming sector, despite previous speculations that were dispelled by the previous round of layoffs.
In his statement, Parsons acknowledges a “quality miss” with Destiny 2: Lightfall and emphasizes the need to prioritize projects like The Final Shape and Marathon to meet player expectations.
Parsons also mentions the necessity of restructuring the cost structure and focusing solely on Destiny and Marathon to ensure the company’s future success.
“These actions will affect every level of the company, including most of our executive and senior leader roles.”

Additionally, Bungie plans to strengthen its ties with parent company Sony, integrating 155 roles within the company in the coming quarters and transferring an unannounced project to a new studio under PlayStation Studios.
Despite setbacks, Parsons remains optimistic about Bungie’s future, emphasizing the company’s commitment to delivering exceptional gaming experiences.
