During Q2 2024, consumers spent $19.7 billion on mobile games, a slight decline from Q1’s $20.3 billion, but still marking the fourth consecutive year-on-year growth in Q2.
The latest Q2 2024 Digital Market Index report from Sensor Tower indicates a record $36.2 billion in total mobile app consumer spending between April 1st, 2024 and June 30th, 2024, combining figures from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.
In Q2, mobile games continued to dominate overall app spending with a 54% share of the market, compared to non-gaming apps’ 46% share. However, non-gaming app spending saw an increase from 42% in Q2 2023, with Sensor Tower projecting that non-gaming apps could soon surpass mobile games.
Splashing the Cash
Apple users led the growth in mobile game spending with a 7% year-over-year increase, while Android game spending declined by 2%. App Store spending nearly doubled that of Google Play, with Apple owners demonstrating stronger revenue potential.
The US remained the key mobile market in Q2 2024, accounting for 36% of the global sum with $13 billion in total spending. Mainland China was the only other region to exceed $5 billion, showing 8% year-on-year growth on iOS alone.
Spending declined in many of Asia’s top markets, while several European countries, including France, Germany, and the UK, experienced significant growth.
Despite a decline in mobile game downloads, revenue reached a new high of $36.2 billion for the quarter, setting a new record for the mobile industry.
