According to a report from The Information, Instagram has made the decision to eliminate 60 technical program manager positions, removing a layer of management at the company. Impacted employees are being given a two-month period to apply for other jobs within the company. If they are unable to secure a different role at the company after the two-month period, their employment will be terminated.
A former Instagram employee noted in a LinkedIn post that some technical program managers may be expected to “re-interview for PM roles” or project manager roles.
Meta declined to comment on the job cuts but referred to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s March 2023 blog post about the company’s “Year of Efficiency,” focusing on improving financial performance and reducing headcount.
Additionally, Instagram has informed employees about a reorganization of product teams, creating three new focus areas for the team. The new focus areas are Creation, Creators, and Friend Sharing, aiming to support creators driving teen engagement on the platform.
While more than 40 states are suing Meta, alleging that the company’s services are contributing to young users’ mental health problems, Instagram still remains focused on teen engagement and retention.
As Meta is scheduled to testify before the Senate on child safety, Instagram has announced changes regarding teen safety, such as automatically limiting the type of content that teen Instagram and Facebook accounts can see on the social networks.
