Hi-Rez Studios has announced Smite 2, the sequel to the popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, Smite, which first entered open beta in 2013. The announcement comes ahead of 2024’s Smite World Championship.
Similar to its predecessor, Smite 2 will be a MOBA based on mythology, where teams of five gods collaborate to defeat the opposing team’s titan. This sequel will introduce new gods to the Smite universe, with Hecate, a ranged magic user, being the first one revealed. Smite 2 aims to be an approachable MOBA, featuring auto-build and auto-leveling features for new players in matches. It will be available across PC, consoles, and Steam Deck.
Unlike the original Smite, which ran on Unreal Engine 3, Smite 2 will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. According to a FAQ on Smite 2’s website, the transition from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 5 allows for a complete rebuild, providing improved graphics, UI, audio, and god creation. Legacy players from the original Smite will receive “cross-gen skins, badges, and Legacy Gems” after linking their Smite account to Smite 2.
Smite 2 is being developed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with Hi-Rez Studios promising crossplay and cross-progression support between platforms. The specific release date for the final game has not been announced, but interested players can register for the alpha on Smite 2’s website, with monthly testing expected to begin this spring.
