During a recent channel broadcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that WhatsApp has surpassed 100 million monthly active users in the U.S., a country where SMS/texts remain a popular form of communication.
This marks the first time WhatsApp has shared specific user data for the U.S. market. Interestingly, over 50% of WhatsApp users in the country use iPhones, which aligns with iOS’s dominance in the market.
WhatsApp boasts a global user base of over 2 billion monthly active users and has traditionally focused on regions like India, Brazil, and Indonesia, where it has a strong presence.
In recent years, WhatsApp has intensified its marketing efforts in the U.S., leveraging ad campaigns, Times Square placements, and TV spots to highlight its privacy features, including end-to-end encryption. The latest national campaign features cast members from the TV show “Modern Family.”
Meta has been emphasizing the distinctions between Apple’s iMessage “blue bubble” and other devices, but with Apple embracing Rich Messaging Service (RCS), Android users now have enhanced communication capabilities. Despite these advancements, messages between iOS and Android will still display as green bubbles.
Meta continues to promote WhatsApp’s cross-platform functionality, showcasing features like polls, high-quality video calling, and reactions. To further drive awareness, the company has placed a large bubble installation between Apple and Samsung stores at The Americana Mall in Los Angeles.
