Substack has introduced a new feature that allows writers to draft and publish posts directly from their iOS app, marking a significant update for the platform. Previously, users could only read content on the app, but now they can create and publish new posts on the go. This brings Substack in line with other platforms like Medium and WordPress, which already offer mobile editing capabilities.
The initial version of the mobile editor enables text and image publishing, with plans for future updates to include features like syncing drafts to the web dashboard. While the editor is currently exclusive to iOS, Substack intends to bring it to Android users in the near future.
Substack has also outlined upcoming additions to the app, such as post scheduling, editing functions, and the ability to create video and podcast content. Despite the mobile editor not yet matching the web version in terms of features, the streamlined interface is designed for convenience, enabling writers to share quick updates between longer posts or offer subscribers exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
To access the new editor, writers can simply tap the orange “plus” button on the home screen and select “Post” within the app. Drafts are automatically saved during the writing process, and users can easily add images and embeds to their posts. After finishing their content, writers can choose their publishing and paywall settings before finalizing the post submission.
According to Substack, the in-app post editor was a highly requested feature since the app’s launch in March 2022. The company reports that over 25% of subscriptions originate from the app and that app users have 50% more paid subscriptions compared to non-app users.
