AltStore, a non-traditional app store, has recently introduced its initial collection of third-party iOS apps within the European Union. This release follows the prior launch of an updated version of AltStore PAL in the EU, a response to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) pushing Apple to permit competition from new market entrants.
Included in this first batch are the torrenting app iTorrent, enabling P2P file downloads, and qBitControl, a qBittorrent remote client for iOS devices. Additionally, the roster features PeopleDrop, a social networking platform facilitating connections among nearby individuals.
Also included is UTM SE, an emulator allowing users to operate vintage software and classic games. Unlike the others, UTM SE is accessible on the official iOS App Store, whereas the remaining three were developed exclusively for the alternative AltStore platform.
AltStore has carefully assessed these initial apps to ensure compliance with its safety criteria. Users can acquire them by configuring them in the “Sources” section, thereafter accessible through the “Browse” tab.
The DMA dictates Apple to implement APIs enabling developers to distribute applications beyond the App Store, ushering in an ecosystem where developers can rival the primary iOS app marketplace.
