The Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Unite, a cross-platform MOBA game, has achieved $82.7 million in gross revenue ($57.9m net) on mobile till now, as it celebrates its third anniversary. These estimates are provided by AppMagic.
The largest revenue contribution on the platform is from the US, accounting for 29% of total revenue. Japan follows closely at 25%, with South Korea in third place at 7%.
The three-year celebration of Unite includes the introduction of Ho-Oh, a beloved phoenix character, marking three years since the game’s launch on Nintendo Switch in July 2021. The mobile anniversary will follow on September 22nd, with both platforms celebrating simultaneously.
During its first month after launch in October 2021, the game generated $9.4 million in revenue. However, monthly revenue has not surpassed $3.3 million since then. The game’s highest-earning period was its first full year, accumulating $39.6 million on mobile from September 22nd, 2021, to September 21st, 2022.
In its second year, Pokémon Unite generated $24.6 million on mobile, while in its third year, the revenue stands at $18.4 million so far, with two more months remaining.
Strength in numbers
According to AppMagic estimates, Pokémon Unite has reached 92.2 million downloads on mobile, with India and Brazil having the largest install bases at 12% each. The US follows at 10%, with Japan accounting for 5% of the downloads, indicating high spending from these regions.
Downloads peaked in October 2021 at almost 14 million and have significantly decreased each month since. In June 2024, there were 1.6 million downloads.
The developer TiMi Studio Group, a subsidiary of Tencent, has expanded the Pokémon roster from 20 playable Pokémon evolutionary lines at launch to 65 currently over the past three years, tapping into the appeal of the Pokémon franchise.
The in-game evolutionary mechanics add to the variety, with most Pokémon starting in their base form and evolving during gameplay, such as from Charmander to Charizard.
Ho-Oh’s addition follows a trend of bringing rare Legendary Pokémon to the game, enhancing player experiences. The current event, running until August 11th, 2024, incentivizes player engagement by offering free daily rolls in a board game. Players can unlock Ho-Oh as a playable character by completing missions and acquiring items during the event. Player retention is currently estimated at 2.6% at day 30 by AppMagic.
