The video game landscape has lost one of its most iconic voices with the passing of actor Sam A. Mowry, known for voicing multiple Dota 2 heroes. News of his death spread on social media on July 23.
According to the Oregon Artswatch, Mowry suffered a cardiac arrest while awaiting surgery. He was 64 years old.
Mowry was famous for giving voice to Dota 2 heroes like Anti-Mage, Beastmaster, Clockwerk, Necrophos, Slardar, and Warlock. His association with the game started from the beginning, as he voiced The Shopkeeper in the original Dota 2 Trailer at Gamescom 2011.
In addition to Dota 2, Mowry contributed his voice to numerous characters in various video game titles. Some of his credits include Rhaast from Legends of Runeterra, Arpeggio in Sly Cooper, Alexander in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Kessler in inFamous.
Following his passing, several tributes were posted on social media. Riot Games expressed their condolences, stating:
“For the voice of a Darkin, Sam was a bastion of light. It was an honor to work with him, and he will forever be a part of Runeterra.”
Wykrhm Reddy, a prominent figure in the Dota 2 community, also shared condolences on behalf of Valve:
“Rest in Peace Sam. Thank you for being the voice behind unforgettable moments for millions of fans worldwide.”
“Whenever a Dota player wonders what a hero truly needs, your voice will echo in their minds forever.”
Apart from his work in video games, Mowry was known as a skilled stage actor with a strong passion for theatre. He was a respected presence in Portland, Oregon’s theatre community.
Mowry is survived by his wife, Cindy McGean, his son, Atticus Mowry, and his siblings Judith Mowry, Jane Galloway, and Paul Mowry.
