Following the U.S. ban on Huawei’s access to Android and Windows, the company began developing HarmonyOS to allow cross-platform app distribution. While the smart device version is Android-based, the upcoming PC version, HarmonyOS Next, will be Android-free, utilizing its microkernel.
Despite being Android-free, HarmonyOS Next may have Linux compatibility for drivers, enhancing its usability. This move aligns with China’s ambition to adopt HarmonyOS as its national operating system, reducing reliance on U.S. tech.
While HarmonyOS has gained momentum in China, it remains localized for now. However, plans to introduce HarmonyOS globally have been discussed by Huawei executives, indicating a broader rollout in the future.
