Despite Larian Studios moving on to new projects, they are not abandoning Baldur’s Gate 3 just yet. The studio announced that Patch 7 is on the way in September, bringing some highly anticipated features, including the long-awaited modding toolkit. A post on Steam provides more details about the toolkit, along with new features like dynamic split-screen mode and improvements to the permadeath Honour Mode.
The modding kit utilizes Mod.io, enabling players to download mods on both PC and consoles. While Larian will still allow players to create mods outside the toolkit, using the software will ensure compatibility with future fixes. It also offers easy access to assets such as cosmetics, classes, UI elements, and more, with a user-friendly interface rather than just a long list of code.
Official mod support has been requested by many players since the game’s early access phase, becoming more critical after a hotfix in February broke numerous mods. Director of publishing Michael Douse stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the team had been working on a toolkit for some time, and now it is officially launching with Patch 7.
Aside from the modding toolkit, Patch 7 of Baldur’s Gate 3 introduces a dynamic split-screen mode for co-op play, allowing players to explore more independently without being tethered to the same screen. The game automatically switches to split-screen when players are sufficiently apart and reverts to the regular mode when they are close together.
Additional updates in Patch 7 include new cinematics for evil endings, improvements and bug fixes for Dark Urge players, and more enemies with Legendary Actions for added challenge. Dialogue and cinematics for all Origin characters are also being enhanced, such as improved facial animations in kissing scenes for Astarion fans.
Players can preview the upcoming updates on July 22 when Patch 7 is added to the closed beta. To participate in the beta, you can register on the Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam page.
Larian assures fans that Patch 7 is not the final update, with plans to include crossplay and a photo mode before transitioning fully to Baldur’s Gate 4 and other projects.
