Team Vitality’s season may not have started off strong, but there is still hope for a turnaround with a strong performance in the VCT EMEA Stage 2 playoffs and a chance to qualify for VALORANT Champions. The playoff journey begins with a match against NAVI after a victory over Karmine Corp in the regular season. Following their win, we caught up with Vitality’s IGL Jokūbas “ceNder” Labutis.
What are your initial thoughts on the series against KC? Are you satisfied with the win?
ceNder: We would have been happier with a 2-0 victory! However, we faced some challenges on Lotus with our rotations, so it’s a bit mixed feelings. Overall, I am content with the win.
Lee: The first map on Icebox was heavily in your favor, while the other maps were more closely contested.
Why do you think there was such a difference in performance?
ceNder: I believe the composition they played in the first map was uncomfortable for them. Maybe they had a specific strategy that didn’t work out, and it didn’t suit their playstyle. We also had successful retakes and won some crucial rounds. On the other hand, in the second and third maps, they were in form and fought back.
Lee: The win means you’ll be facing NAVI in the Playoffs instead of Fnatic. Are you pleased with how the draw turned out?
ceNder: Playing against NAVI will be less stressful than facing Fnatic, even though Fnatic is a top-performing team. NAVI is currently struggling and making more mistakes, so I am happy with the matchup against them.
How has the coaching change to Gorilla as head coach impacted the team?
Lee: As the IGL, I assume it has influenced you more than your teammates.
ceNder: The change has been positive for me as an IGL. I now have more freedom and can make adaptive decisions rather than strictly following a set plan. It’s a healthier approach to leading the team, with input from my teammates and coaches like trexx guiding me during the match. This collaborative style of leading has improved our overall performance.
How do you feel about transitioning to the role of IGL, especially now that you’ve been leading Vitality for a year?
Lee: When you first took on the role, you expressed confidence in your suitability and criticized the quality of IGLs in VCT.
ceNder: The key to being a successful IGL is to stay composed and avoid getting frustrated. Mistakes happen, but it’s essential to stay focused and move on to the next decision. Keeping a clear head allows me to maintain leadership within the team. I value input from my teammates and coaches, as they often provide valuable perspectives that enhance our gameplay.
