Samsung unveiled the latest iterations of its two foldable phones on Wednesday at its Unpacked 2024 event. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 have been designed to be thinner and lighter than their previous models. The Fold 6 also introduces an update to its front display aspect ratio. The starting prices for both devices have increased, with the Fold starting at $1,900 and the Flip at $1,100.
However, the main focus of these new devices is artificial intelligence. The press release for the devices emphasizes this, mentioning “AI” a total of 25 times and stating that the devices elevate Galaxy AI to new heights. The devices are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which is also used in the Galaxy S24.
The release of the Galaxy S24 earlier in the year marked the beginning of Samsung’s Galaxy AI campaign. This year has seen a rise in mobile AI devices with other tech giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft making AI a central focus at their developer conferences. Samsung and Google have strengthened their relationship in recent years, collaborating on projects like an Android fork for foldables and a new version of Wear OS for Galaxy Watch devices.
Google’s generative AI app Gemini also plays a significant role in the functionality of the Z Fold 6, integrated into the large screen of the device. Samsung has shifted from its in-house Bixby assistant to utilize Google’s latest technology.
On the AI front, Samsung is enhancing its Notes app with AI-driven features such as voice recording transcription, translation, and summarization, in line with Google and Apple’s AI capabilities. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 also sports a squarer internal aspect ratio, responding to consumer demand for more practical foldable devices.
Both phones are currently available for pre-order and are set to ship on July 24.
