Pestle, a recipe app and cooking assistant, is incorporating AI technology to simplify saving recipes from social media platforms. The latest update now enables users to import recipes directly from Instagram Reels using on-device machine learning for quick processing and saving to your recipe collection.
This new feature allows you to save recipes from Reels almost instantly, according to Pestle’s developer, Will Bishop.
Originally launched in 2022, Pestle was developed by Bishop to address the frustration of finding recipes online amidst cluttered websites filled with ads and lengthy stories. The app allows users to save recipes from the web, plan meals, create shopping lists, explore new recipes, utilize voice commands, and even cook hands-free or remotely with friends and family via Apple’s SharePlay feature for FaceTime.
While the app initially focused on saving web recipes, the demand for saving recipes from Instagram led to the latest update. Bishop opted to use on-device machine learning rather than OpenAI’s ChatGPT for faster processing and better user privacy.
To utilize this new feature, users can share an Instagram Reel with Pestle, similar to saving web recipes. The app also supports importing plain-text recipes.
The updated version of Pestle is available as a free download on the iOS App Store, with additional features for subscribers including a discover section, 14-day meal planning support, shopping lists with Apple Reminders integration, and more.
