The ongoing dispute between Apple and Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, shows no signs of ending.
Epic has been in a longstanding battle with Apple regarding the revenue-sharing terms in the App Store. While Epic lost its antitrust lawsuit against Apple last year, similar criticisms emerged in a separate lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice and 17 state attorneys general in March.
In Europe, the Digital Markets Act allowed Epic to launch its Epic Games Store on iOS and reintroduce Fortnite to the platform with lower commissions to Apple. Despite this, Apple rejected the games store twice, citing similarities between the store and its own App Store, particularly in the “install” and “in-app purchase” buttons.
After Epic publicly criticized Apple’s rejections as “arbitrary and obstructive” and reported its concerns to European regulators, Apple eventually approved the games store but requested changes in a future update.
However, the conflict is not over. Epic announced on Twitter that it is disputing Apple’s decision. Founder and CEO Tim Sweeney expressed frustration with Apple’s demand to change the buttons in the next version, making the store less standard and user-friendly. Epic vowed to continue fighting against Apple’s demands.
It remains to be seen whether Epic will stand firm against making further changes to its game store. The ongoing dispute between Epic and Apple continues, with uncertain outcomes on both sides.
