- World of Tanks Blitz is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary since global launch
- The mobile game has surpassed $1 billion in lifetime earnings
World of Tanks Blitz is commemorating its 10th anniversary since global launch and has exceeded $1 billion in lifetime revenue.
Wargaming’s flagship game has amassed a player base of 180 million over the past decade and has expanded from eight maps to a total of 30. Presently, World of Tanks Blitz boasts over 500 historical tanks and offers players access to 11 different game modes.
Driving Force
After Wargaming unveiled a mobile spinoff of World of Tanks in March 2013, Blitz was soft-launched in Nordic countries in May 2014 and subsequently launched globally on June 26th, 2014. Initially exclusive to Apple devices, Blitz has since extended its reach to Android platforms, achieving over $1 billion in revenue across operating systems. GamesBeat spoke with Wargaming’s general manager of MS-1 Studios, Thaine Lyman, who attributed Blitz’s early success to its distinction as “one of the few games on mobile that was a game, frankly, and not just an alarm clock simulator”.
The 10th anniversary celebrations commenced in June with the introduction of new Tier VIII and favorite Tier X tanks, continuing into July and August with space-themed events like Objective: Sheridan Missile, centered around the return of the Sheridan Missile tank.
Further attractions include a Kobayashi Maru test and a Starfleet-themed tank, in collaboration with Star Trek. Blitz’s willingness to embrace the unconventional and imaginative appeals to a younger demographic, exemplified by recent crossovers with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
“Over time, we’ve moved away from a strict historical focus towards the enjoyment of driving powerful tanks and engaging in exciting gameplay,” stated Lyman. “While PC gaming may cater to a mature audience, Blitz targets a Gen Z demographic, creating a space for fun and creativity.”
Reaching a decade milestone and solidifying its position among mobile gaming successes, World of Tanks Blitz has evolved over the years to remain relevant in a dynamic industry landscape.
Combining tradition with innovation, 2023 witnessed World of Tanks’ debut at Tankfest, featuring newly-introduced 3D animations with tanks sporting dinosaur-themed designs.
