It is now easier than ever to create deepfakes of someone’s voice or face, but YouTube is taking steps to address this issue by allowing users to report videos that use their likeness without permission.
YouTube has updated its privacy request process to include takedown requests for deepfakes, shifting the focus from merely being misleading to recognizing deepfakes as a privacy concern. With the increasing availability of AI tools, there is a higher risk of their misuse.
While YouTube won’t automatically remove these videos, it will assess factors such as whether it is a parody, if the requester can be identified, or if it involves a public figure. There will be a stricter approach for deepfakes of copyrighted music as well.
The effectiveness of this initiative will depend on the enforcement of these guidelines. If YouTube can efficiently remove harmful content, it will be considered a success.
