Carol Carpenter, the senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Unity, is stepping down from her position as part of the company’s ongoing reshuffle. Her official resignation will take effect on June 30th, but she will continue to act as Unity’s strategic marketing advisor until her departure on December 1st, 2024.
The decision to leave follows the appointment of Matthew Bromberg as Unity’s new CEO, with former interim CEO Jim Whitehurst transitioning into the role of executive chair. This leadership change comes in the wake of former chief executive John Riccitiello’s departure last year, which was prompted by the controversial introduction of the runtime fee that caused outrage in the developer community.
In addition to Carpenter, Unity has seen other executive exits, including chief product and technology officer Marc Whitten. The company also underwent a restructuring that involved layoffs, office closures, and the discontinuation of certain business operations.
To bolster its reputation and appeal to developers, Unity has brought on Xbox veteran Larry Hryb, also known as Major Nelson, as the new director of community. His 22 years of experience at Microsoft provide a strong foundation for his role in engaging with the Unity community.
Despite these changes, opinions among developers remain divided on Unity’s future and the impact of the runtime fee. While some are optimistic about the company’s direction, others remain skeptical about its ability to fully recover and regain trust within the industry.
